PHOENIX SPORT – 2nd August 2025

After the excitement of Euro 2025 and the superb victory last Sunday by England’s lionesses, the 2025/26 domestic football season is being phased in.

This weekend saw the return of the third and fourth tiers of English football, as well as the Scottish Premiership.

In Sky Bet League One Leyton Orient , who came very close to winning promotion last season got off to a disappointing start, with a 3-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town, whilst in League Two, Colchester United – who narrowly missed out on a.play-off spot at the end of 2024/25 –  began the new campaign with a 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers at the Community Stadium.

The FA Cup began this weekend with the Extra Preliminary Round, featuring clubs from non-League steps four and five including a host of teams from Essex and East London – including Essex Senior League newcomers Hackney Wick, who made a successful return to the competition after a seven season gap by winning their tie away to Bearsted by a goal to nil.

We had a featured match in the Thurlow Nunn Division One South, where Hutton made it three wins out of three and are top of the table, following their 1-0 victory over Coggeshall Town at New Lodge.
