Martin’s Choice – My song choice for today is by American Singer songwriter and record producer Luther Ronzoni Vandross Jr. Born in April 1951 in New York but who sadly passed away in July 2005.
Vandross began his music career in the late 1960s performing at the Apollo Theater in New York City as part of a local musical ensemble. The group later appeared on the television show Sesame Street in the early 1970s. He eventually established himself as a sought-after backing vocalist, contributing to albums by Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Todd Rundgren, Evelyn “Champagne” King , Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, and Donna summer to name but a few!
In 1980, he served as the lead vocalist for the post-disco group called “Change” who had a hit album Titled “A Glow of Love”and from it had a hit single called “Searching” which is a great song.
After Vandross left the group, he was signed to Epic records as a solo artist and released his debut solo album, “Never Too Much” in 1981, this was then the start of a string of platinum selling albums he had with over 40 million sold worldwide. Vandross collaborated on several notable duets with other famous artists including Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Beyonce which he had some big hits with. He has won many awards for his music including eight Grammys and was recognized by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 200 greatest singers of all time.
As is usual there are hundreds of great songs that he wrote to choose from but I’m going to request one of the many cover songs that he recorded and this one has a brilliant arrangement of an old song from the Roger’s and Hammerstein film “the Sound Of Music “ The song is called “My Favourite Things” to me this particular song shows off what a fantastic singer and great talent he was!
