Survivor of the Balkans War shares memories

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia, where more than 8000 Muslim boys and men, selected for death because of their faith and ethnicity, were murdered and buried in mass graves during the Bosnian War.

The massacre was the first legally recognised genocide in Europe since World War II. Brentwood Council will be flying a flag outside the Town Hall this week to remember victims of the genocide.

Lejla Kevric came into the studio to talk about the event on Jo Bailey’s Drive show.

Lejla was born in former Yugoslavia and talked about her memories of the war while growing up there.

She talked on air about the uncertainty and fear of her childhood during the war, with families who thought the conflict would end sooner than it did.

Local events and personal memories, including Lejla’s favourite dish, help keep stories and memories alive.

You can hear the interview with Lejla again at www.phoenixfm.com.
